Veli Jože was once the most well-liked small restaurant in Rovinj. Located at the beginning of the narrow street, sv. Križ, which stretches along the coast and eventually climbs all the way up to the church of St. Euphemia. Once people went to Veli Jože to look at their famous antique diving suit and a full range of marine equipment, old photographs, nautical flags and fishing nets. And the food was based on the same “fisherman” style as the surroundings: salted fish, pasta and sauce with anchovies, good calamari, fish stew… And then came the tourists. At Veli Jože you can still find the diver, the nets and the photographs, but with none of the fisherman’s soul. The pasta with mushrooms and scampi is covered in cream, while their white sauces are more red than white; which should never happened in a true fisherman’s restaurant.
